A slate of write-in candidates vying for six seats on the board of the Society for Human Resource Management lost to a group of SHRM-endorsed contenders in a highly contested race. The organization announced the winning candidates this week.

"We are not surprised to hear that SHRM won the election. We knew it was an uphill battle and SHRM did everything possible to put obstacles in our way," read a press statement by SHRM Members for Transparency, a dissident group of former leaders and current members whose candidates vowed if elected, to reject pay for serving on the board and reimbursement for premiere air travel. Concerns over board pay and travel policies have been at the core of the group's concerns since they formed in 2010 over concerns about SHRM leadership.

The newly elected members of the 13-member 2013 SHRM board include:

  • Jorge Consuegra, partner at the communications agency The Fearless Group.
  • My-Chau Nguyen, senior vice president of customer relationship marketing for Sirius XM Radio.
  • Coretha M. Rushing, senior vice president and chief human resources officer, Equifax Inc.
  • Brian D. Silva, senior vice president of human resources and administration, Fresenius Medical Care.
  • José Tomas, president of Latin America and Caribbean and global chief people officer, Burger King Corp.
  • David Windley, former chief human resources officer at Yahoo.

"We welcome this group of six accomplished HR professionals and business leaders to the SHRM board. Their experiences reflect the diverse business backgrounds needed to guide an association of SHRM's size and scope in 2013 and beyond," said Henry G. Jackson, president and CEO of SHRM.

The board sets broad policies and strategic direction and provides fiduciary oversight for the 260,000-member SHRM.
