Looming Strike in India a Threat to U.S. Companies?

Trade unions there called for a nationwide strike to protest India's opening of its retail sector to international retailers Walmart and Tesco.

With the threat of massive worker strikes on several fronts all but assured for Sept. 20, it appears businesses in India are already planning for what's being called a nationwide shutdown.

Business outsourcing provider Infosys BPO, based in Bangalore, told Workforce.com it is closing its offices Sept. 20 as a result of the nationwide strike. The company is a subsidiary of Infosys Ltd. and has more than 21,000 employees around the world.

Indian trade unions called for a nationwide strike to protest India's opening of its retail sector to international retailers Walmart and Tesco. Additionally, thousands of transportation workers plan a one-day strike Sept. 20 to protest rising diesel costs.
